What a summer for our Tameside care-experienced young people!
Our Tameside care-experienced young people aged 10-16 and 16-25 have been very busy doing some brilliant activities over the summer!
For our 10-16 year old group this include a gardening project with the Leap Centre, and escape room in Ashton, Food Sorcery cooking course, pottery painting, and a Peaks Adventure Day.
The Peaks Adventure Day included a walk up Mam Tor and a boat trip underground in Speedwell Cavern joined with the Manchester 10-16 year old care experience young people.
Our Tameside care-experienced 16-25 year olds have been taking on new activities this summer too.
There was a trip to Food Sorcery Cooking School in Didsbury where we made Gyoza and Nasi goring, and we had a trip to Hollywood Bowl in Ashton.
It’s important for young people to experience new hobbies especially during the summer holidays, so we’re so glad we could learn some new cooking skills and have fun at the same time!
In August we had a great time getting out in nature! We got to visit Valley Farm in Daisy Nook Park. The sessions included fire making, den building, string making, making bread and cooking this on the fire, toasting marshmallows and making S’mores, using saws to make out of logs and petting the animals!
Some of the young people said “My whole life I’ve always wanted to stroke a sheep!” And “I’ve loved being outside and doing something different”.
We also went for a walk around Dovestone reservoir, kayaking on Droylsden canal and went of a walk around Daisy Nook Country Park. It’s great to make memories with our young people and to try something new.
We’ve seen our young people gain new skills too with some brilliant training courses. These include Food Hygiene Level 2, Emergency First Aid at Work and they took part in a 3 day DIY course for care leavers funded by GMI Construction.
We are so pleased our young people get to experience such a range of activities and can develop their skills, a big thank you to GMI Construction for supporting GMYN!
Throughout the summer holidays we had lots of young people take part in Snow Camp. Our young people from Tameside care experience groups, Beeing Together programme and Bolton care experience group have had a great time at Chill Factore taking part in Snow Camp.
We had over 25 young people attend, it’s great when our young people can meet others from different groups and make new friends!
One of our young people said “Snow Camp was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done”.
Cared-for or ‘looked-after’ young people and care leavers can face multiple challenges due to early adverse experiences, meaning they struggle compared to their peers.
GMYN has been helping young people aged 10-25 since 2012 through programmes to build social skills, encourage positive wellbeing, develop self-esteem and provide skills for the future.
