‘Since taking part in GMYN’s work readiness programme a lot has changed for the better’

One of our young people has shared how taking part in one of GMYN’s work readiness programmes has changed his life for the better.
*Ryan was eager to explore the world of construction and introduced to our ‘Build Your Future’ programme by his education & careers advice worker.
Following a difficult experience of education, Ryan’s goals were to develop his confidence and communication skills, as well as receiving help with his CV and interview prep.
Ryan took part in several ‘World of Work’ visits and one-to-ones and built a positive rapport with both GMYN youth workers and industry professionals.

He also completed a three-day work experience placement, gaining a City & Guilds qualification in Conduct at Work, and training in Painting & Decorating and Joinery from qualified tradespeople.
Ryan’s confidence grew each time he added a new experience to his CV, and he recently passed his Level 1 Award in Health & Safety as well as achieving 100 per cent on his CSCS Card test, something he had previously felt would be unattainable for him based on his fear of exam settings.
Ryan says: “Now I have a reason to get out of the house. I’m visiting new places, learning something new and meeting new people.
“My mental health has improved a lot. When I left school, I was worried about what I was going to do, now I feel less pressure.
“I have some structure and routine which feels manageable, and I am more confident in travelling to new places by bus, train and tram. I also now have a higher chance of being employed. Being unemployed would have been very difficult. A lot has changed for the better.”
The biggest benefit of the programme for Ryan has been the individualised support he has received at GMYN, taking steps towards his goals at a pace that has felt achievable without being overwhelming.
Our one-to-one support helped him to work through his reservations and anxieties in a safe and supportive environment. When things became overwhelming, we were able to support him with coping strategies.
Throughout the project Ryan has demonstrated improved self-awareness and perseverance, and we could not be prouder!
Our work readiness programmes are made possible thanks to GMYN’s generous supporters including Westwood Recruitment.
Westwood Recruitment are donating a phenomenal £23,100 to fund a permanent work readiness offer for GMYN’s young people over the next 12 months.
This game-changing support means we can provide consistent, high-quality work readiness opportunities that help young people build confidence, develop new skills and maintain momentum in their employment.
Westwood Recruitment has already made significant contributions to GMYN as sponsors of the GMYN Westwood Cup and as match funders for our Big Give Christmas Challenge. This new partnership takes their support to an exciting new level.
