Hear My Voice project for care experienced young people in Salford

April 23rd, 2024

Some of our care experienced young people are working on a project called Hear My Voice.

The aim of the project is to create a graphic novel about experiences of care – both good and not so good. We wanted the young people who are part of this project to access this work once it is completed, so that they can leave some legacy and hopefully help other care experienced young people too.

The young people range from ages 10-25 years old and are all based in Salford. A local artist is directing the project by showing the young people the different art they can explore and showing new ways to express themselves.

The young people began by creating an avatar of their choice that represents a person or characteristics of individuals who they have met throughout their care experiences. The avatars will then be used to tell anonymous stories which will be captured in comic form.

In another session the group attended the Lowry to continue model making which will form the basis of content for their upcoming graphic book.

Bradley Lincoln, Programme Coordinator at GMYN, says: “It’s been brilliant to see what the young people have created so far, we want them to be part of a legacy so that they can build on this if they want to in the future.

“It’s also great that hopefully whatever the young people produce they will be able to keep a copy of, either a hard copy or online.”
