Young People Learn Essential DIY Skills in These Weekly Skills & Tools Sessions

May 30th, 2023

Care Experienced Young People in Salford have been taking part in the Skills and Tools Project – learning simple DIY techniques, helping them to lead independent lives.

Funded by Nationwide Building Society, these weekly workshops guide care experienced young people – who might not have had the chance to learn DIY skills – through everyday DIY tasks.

Each week they are joined by instructor – a member of the ‘Handy Person Team’ from Manchester Care & Repair – who shares expert advice on a range of DIY related topics.

So far young people have tried their hand at constructing flat pack furniture, repairing broken items around the home, assembling shelving units and more! Last week they put together a shelving cube which was donated to the communal area in the residential space the workshops take place in, meaning they get to share their efforts with other care experienced young people in their community.

The group have also developed an understanding of the best equipment and tools to use and how to do so in a safe effective way.

“I’ll remember to count out all the screws – since taking part in the sessions I want to get involved in a course to learn more DIY skills.”
